GOODYS BODY SHOP - Our Medical Facility

Overview
Goody’s Body Shop has most of the capabilities of an urgent care center, with staff and equipment to take care of commonly anticipated medical problems plus the added capability to perform specialized treatments such as IV chemotherapy or factor infusions for children with hemophilia.
An emergency cart is kept in the Body Shop that is fully stocked with airway equipment, IV supplies, oxygen, suction machine, and a cardiac monitor/defibrillator. Additional equipment and supplies are kept near the front door of the Body Shop for easy access if needed elsewhere on camp.
Pharmacy
The “Med Room” or pharmacy is a very busy place when campers are here. The main function of our nursing staff and volunteers is to ensure that every camper receives their prescribed medications as ordered. Medications are administered primarily at mealtimes, in the Fuel Stop, and at bedtime (in the cabins, or on the way to the cabins). All camper and staff meds are kept in the locked Med Room. No medications are kept in the cabins, except a small amount of Tylenol, on the counselor’s side. All narcotics and potential drugs of abuse are stored in a second, locked room in the back of the pharmacy. A supply of medications to treat commonly-occurring conditions is maintained in the Med Room. Any medication administration or procedure involving a needle is done in the Body Shop.
Lab Tests
We are able to do hemoglobin measurements, blood glucose determinations, rapid strep tests, and dipstick urinalyses in the Body Shop. Any additional blood work is drawn in the Body Shop and sent to Randolph Hospital in Asheboro (12 miles away).Summer Medical Staffing
We have a full-time year-round Medical Director and Nursing Director supplemented by four full-time RN’s each summer that act as “Unit Nurses”. In addition, ideal staffing consists of a volunteer physician “specialist of the week”, plus a generalist physician (Pediatrician, Family Physician, or Emergency Physician), and an additional 4-8 volunteer nurses each session. We often have additional physician extenders (Nurse Practitioners or Physician Assistants).Staff List with qualifications
