MEDICAL VOLUNTEERS
- Health Care Professional Opportunities
- Summer Weeks - LPNS, RNs, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, EMTs, and other medical professionals or students are needed as cabin counselors. Because so much care is provided around the clock, health-care professionals are essential to the mix of volunteer counselors who live and play with the campers all week. Cabin Counselor volunteers live with campers and go to activities, encouraging them and ensuring they have the ultimate experience. CABIN COUNSELORS take care of the daily needs of five to eight campers. The job requires being actively involved in the supervision, guidance, and motivation of campers by building working relationships with kids and staff to ensure that a high standard of care is maintained. Cabin counselors are expected to sing, dance, and be silly; we play with kids! Meals are provided in the dining hall and are taken with the campers and other staff.
- Summer Days – For each session, Victory Junction is in need of several volunteer nurses, pharmacists, and/or pharmacy technicians to assist in preparation of camper medications. Generally the time commitment is from 1 - 6 p.m. ET every camper arrival day during the summer season. Please see schedule for dates.
- Transportation Days – Due to the medical needs of campers, medical staff is often preferred to assist with transportation of the campers to and from site. Victory Junction provides transportation for all campers should they require it in order to attend camp. We are in great need of individuals to help on camper arrival day and departure day (the first and last day of the session). The vehicle and training are provided.
- Weekends – We also offer Family Weekends in the Fall and Spring Season. Please see the schedule for details. While the role is different on a weekend, Victory Junction is still in great need of having medical volunteers. As a health-care professional on a weekend, you will be a crew chief. A crew chief acts as a host to one of the camper families. At least one member of the full-time medical team is always on site and takes calls. Weekend volunteers are provided housing on site. Expect to share a room with two or three other volunteers. All housing options are air-conditioned and indoor bathrooms and showers are provided. Meals are provided in the dining hall and are taken with the campers and other staff.

- Physician and Advanced-Practice Provider Opportunities
- SUMMER WEEKS - Victory Junction recruits volunteer physicians, physician assistants and nurse practitioners (specialists and/or general practitioners) to assist with each session. All work closely with the nursing staff to provide routine and emergency care to campers and staff. Resident physicians, at the PGY-2 or greater level, assist in the Body Shop under the supervision of the Medical Director.
The General Assembly of North Carolina passed a bill (1177) in May 2003 that allows physicians who are licensed in another state to “practice medicine or surgery at a camp that specializes in providing therapeutic recreation for individuals with chronic illnesses” for < 30 days/year.
Care includes: following each camper's individual plan of care as detailed by their home physician or specialist, providing needed treatments, medication administration, and lab draws, as well as assisting with camper personal care needs. Volunteer Physicians, PAs and NPs also spend a portion of the session triaging and treating the unexpected camper and/or staff illness or injury.
Volunteer physicians and nurses do not live with the campers as do the volunteer cabin counselors. Expect to share a room with two or three other volunteers. All housing options are air-conditioned and indoor bathrooms and showers are provided. Meals are provided in our dining hall and are taken with the campers and other staff. There is limited housing available for an Advanced Practice Provider to bring their family along. Please contact us for more information and requirements.
Every medical volunteer, new and old, is expected to arrive at camp the day before his or her session starts for an Orientation to camp. Camp provides an extensive orientation on medical care and behavioral modification techniques… as well as all the fun items like songs and cheers.
All medical personnel (volunteer and staff) are expected to be on-duty 24 hours a day. Night call is taken by full-time summer staff only. However, volunteers may be called upon to assist should the need arise.

- Registered Nurse Opportunities
- SUMMER WEEKS - For each summer session, Victory Junction recruits four to six volunteer RNs to assist with camper and staff care. Volunteer nurses work side-by-side with one of the staff nurses to provide primary care to a group of campers with specific diagnoses. Care includes: following each camper's individual plan of care as detailed by their home physician or specialist, providing needed treatments, medication administration, and lab draws, as well as assisting with camper personal care needs. Volunteer nurses also spend a portion of the session triaging and treating the unexpected camper and/or staff illness or injury.
Nursing volunteers must be RNs and have a current North Carolina nursing license. The North Carolina Board of Nursing is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact, an interstate organization. This means that the North Carolina board of Nursing recognizes and honors nursing licenses issued by other “compact” states. If you do not hold a nursing license in NC or one the compact states, you must obtain a NC nursing license to volunteer as a nurse at camp. Information about obtaining a NC nursing license is available on-line at www.ncbon.org . All nursing volunteers also must hold current CPR certification.
